    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[Margaret remembers a story from the trip of the King of Siam going to the US for an eye operation. After the surgery had been done, no bill was presented, and so the King asked for it. The surgeon said something like, &quot;The King can do no wrong. I leave the fee to you.&quot; This meant that the King paid a much larger fee than he ever intended to pay, which he did not appreciate.  ]]></dcterms:description>

    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[Margaret tells the story of her first learning of Anna Leonowens. She tells us that she has often said that when she first read The English Governess in the Siamese Court during that 1930 visit in Nakhon, she really had no sense of a curtain’s going up. The letter in which she recorded the visit, which lasted several days, was dated August 13, 1930, and as she and Kenneth talk it over, they conclude that the visit must have taken place in late July. So in the last days of July, 1930, the saga of Anna began. ]]></dcterms:description>

Dan Bovee had done a great deal to bring this about. There was a man for cutting the grass all day long and carrying water. Nai Lai was doing repairs in the house. Margaret also had a seamstress coming to catch up on the sewing work. It was a lot of work to have enough clothes available at all time in the hot climate. It was about her uncle who was a wizard. She told her that when the wizard&#039;s uncle died his son sat on his grave for three days so that no one could come and dig the body up (the Siamese would use remains of a wizard for all kinds of superstitious practices).     <dcterms:description><![CDATA[Mr Bulkley bought a baby elephant and wanted to ship it to New York to the Museum of National History, where he was a contributor. His wife was traveling on the same ship and he wanted to save the fare of a keeper for the baby elephant. He brought the elephant to his house and had to hire a man to feed the elephant. Margaret and the kids went several times to watch it. He ended up paying quite some money for the all process in order to get the animal on the ship. A cable came from the US saying that there was no sale of elephant in the US at the present time. But the ship had already sailed. ]]></dcterms:description>

Peggy is trying to sing, and since she knows no tune, her singing is always &quot;original.&quot; Miss Eakin never came back from the US, so Margaret ran the school until she left for furlough and resumed the job upon her return. Mrs. Bulkley had three girls and her two boys were in school in India. The Bulkleys were fundamentalists and this led Mrs. Bulkley to be often rude to people. Margaret tells of Mrs. Bulkley&#039;s rude response to her when she suggested that Mrs. Bulkley should grant her daughter, Dorothy, her wish to go to Wheaton College. She explained what the word &quot;fundamentalist&quot; meant in those days, and how fundamentalist views led to much troubles on the mission field. ]]></dcterms:description>
