    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[The overall purpose of Kenneth&#039;s trip was initially to be a political adviser on the negotiations between the English and the Thai. The British had made twenty-one demands on the Thai, which would have made Thailand virtually a British colony. the demands had largely been diminished to one. The British were demanding that Thailand contribute all of its rice free to Burma, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Kenneth took the point of view that the Thai didn&#039;t have the rice; it was the Chinese merchants who did.]]></dcterms:description>

    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[When Harry Truman became President, the Potsdam conference changed the war theater for MacArthur. This brought Lord Louis Mountbatten&#039;s command into Thailand and the Indochinese states south of the 16th parallel, with Chiang Kai Shek north of that. Roosevelt&#039;s policy on no return of the French to Indochina aborted right there at Potsdam, courtesy of Harry Truman. That was a dramatic change. At the end of the war, the British put twenty-one demands on the Thai. So the State Department went to work on the twenty-one demands, which led to Kenneth&#039;s travelling out at the end of the war.  ]]></dcterms:description>

    <dcterms:title><![CDATA[Kenneth on the Story of Ah Peh and the Viper Bite]]></dcterms:title>
    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[Ah Peh was clearing out the pineapples behind the house, under Margaret&#039;s direction. There were hundreds of them, making a haven for cobras and vipers. As Ah he worked, a viper struck him in the lower leg, and he became very sick. Kenneth rushed him down to the hospital. He was treated and got back to normal in a couple of days. Two weeks later he was terribly sick again, but the doctor couldn&#039;t see anything wrong. Eventually they located a spot in the coolie back and extracted quite a bit of pus. The viper struck at the ankle, but the problem developed in the back. The coolie felt much relieved, and cheerful, returned to work, and was his old self. ]]></dcterms:description>

    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[Kenneth flew over to Bali There was an artist on the beach in Bali, with a magnificent looking &quot;dancing woman,&quot; who was one of the more famous dancers. All the women were bare from the waist up. The woman would come around, and she had great big bosoms, and she would lean down and stick them right in front of people&#039;s faces, and then she&#039;d begin to serve. It was a rather unnerving experience to one not accustomed to it. Kenneth toured the rest of the island of Bali, and kept asking questions, and talking about the elections.  ]]></dcterms:description>

    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[When Kenneth tried to have Harvard take Prince Damrong&#039;s library he got on the telephone and called the heads of various departments, including Dr. Keyes DeWitt Metcalf, the head of the library and the most famous librarian in the U.S. at that time in collegiate and academic work. Kenneth called on him and showed him the listing of all these books he had for the university if they were interested. Metcalf declined the offer. When the war broke out, Dr. Metcalf was lamenting the fact that Harvard did not have a library on Southeast Asia to support courses. Kenneth reminded him about his offer to him that he rejected, only a few years earlier. ]]></dcterms:description>

In the morning he looked pale and said that they couldn&#039;t go that day because he was too sick to fly.
