(Richard Milhous), 1913-1994 Description An account of the resource Abbot Low Moffat received a tiger skull ashtray from the Thai government. When Moffat left Southeast Asian affairs, he also left the tiger skull. Kenneth took it upon himself to keep it in his office. When Nixon saw it, he claimed he would get a bigger tiger skull than Kenneth's and he did: "I TOLD YOU I'D GET A BIGGER ONE THAN YOURS, AND I DID!!" Kenneth also tells of a joke of sorts in which Colonel Wilfred Smith presented him with a tray which held a tiger head skull on it--the skull not being part of the gift. There was nothing to eat or drink on board. The plane arrived in Hanoi late in the afternoon. By this point, Kenneth was "just miserable," dehydrated, having had nothing to eat or drink all day. There was one Chinese G.I., squatting over a charcoal brazier, with a little iron pot, cooking a Chinese stew, which was bubbling happily away in its pot. Kenneth tried hard and eventually persuaded this Chinese G.I. to let him share his meal. This gave Kenneth new strength for the rest of his trip. The caller ended by promising to send Kenneth a telegram about his coming to Washington to help the government. Kenneth wasn't very enthusiastic about it; he loved his job at Earlham College and was preoccupied with philosophy. It never occurred to either Kenneth or Margaret that the call from Washington was one of life's pivotal moments, that life would never be the same again. Margaret fully expected him to come back to Richmond after the three weeks. Sunday night, August 10, Kenneth took the train, arriving in Washington the morning of August 11, 1941, and that was that.
