The US consul sent a cable giving the numbers of Americans in peril on these tin mines and rubber estates, all unarmed, and asked if the U.S. government could send them small arms so that they could protect themselves. He was sent in lieu of a man named Phillip Jessup who was supposed to have a special mission on behalf of President Truman to Hanoi, to be Tri's guest and to survey the situation in the countryside. When Kenneth was in Saigon, he was instructed to impersonate Phillip Jessup because Truman had switched Jessup's orders and sent him posthaste to India. As a consequence of this incident, Pramoj's brother is just a relentless enemy of Kenneth. He even wrote about Kenneth in his newspaper, running him down, saying that Kenneth spoke and understood Thai so badly that he could not communicate. Kenneth was in the country at the time, speaking to the Rotary Club that very week. He referred to the article, speaking in Thai, and said, "You'll all be delighted to know that I cannot speak Thai and that you cannot understand me." They just roared with laughter. He proceeded to deliver a twenty-minute speech in Thai "just for the hell of it." He had maps. And he had a ten-year file of Siamese language newspapers, the only person in the U.S. who did. So some Siamese officials concluded that Kenneth had never truly been a missionary at all. He had been a spy. There was a fellow named Monroe Hall, who was coming back from service in Asia but who was ordered to stay for another year because of something he had done. Eventually he returned to the US and worked in the State Department with Kenneth. They were given small offices and hard-bottomed chairs, which Kenneth had trouble sitting on because he had a small bottom. Desks, chairs, rugs, and so on, were prescribed according to rank in the Department. A new executive chair was brought for the Assistant Secretary and Kenneth took it for himself. Over a course of 13 years Kip Landon (Kenneth Landon Jr.) began recording stories from his parents, Margaret and Kenneth Landon, resulting in 95 hours of recordings. Beginning on July 20, 1976, recording finished in June, 1978. The project resumed again in 1982 for a few months. After a long break, the third recording period began in 1988 and concluded in March 1989.
