Yet he was absolutely fearless and quite courageous, without ever showing a sign of these qualities. He managed to arrest without anyone's help the most feared gang bandit in the countryside and so became quite famous. Kenneth was competing with this police lieutenant at the tennis court and was winning, very much against the happiness of the crowd watching their hero lose the game. Kenneth suddenly realized how difficult a position he would be in if he had actually won. He managed to have his opponent win and in a very Thai manner conveyed contempt for what they standed for without saying a word. Kenneth used this Thai technique called "bra chot" in the US as well. Margaret recalls at least two instances where Kenneth used the technique. The temple was beautiful and supposedly contained relics of the Buddha. Margaret further describes the temple and its surroundings. The history of the temple was of a particular interest because it revealed people's lives for centuries. There was a stone with writing in a language that had never been deciphered (a scholar later came and deciphered the writing), and the Brahmin priests were still at the temple. Kenneth talks about their time with the Sheehan family, and the tin mine, the children's growth and behavior, and Margaret's handsome qualities and manners. This was, in his estimate, the best preacher in Siam. He died during the war bombing of the ship he had sailed on. P. Dunlap a book in which were the names of people in a village where Dr. Dunlap had worked. Kenneth used the book to retrieve the people in the village and began to address them by name. He visited the village several times and stayed overnight the third time in the same room as the rest of the family. He became very acquainted with the villagers, and one day he was visted by a couple of men from the village. Later on the young chief from the village came to propose Kenneth to become their overlord. Margaret describes the very ancient feudal manners with which the chief approached Kenneth to become their overlord. It was very moving. Kenneth expressed deep appreciation for the offer but explained the disadvantages associated with the proposal.  Kenneth and Margaret explain that this was the way governments were formed in Thailand since the 1930s. He really wanted to be a doctor for animals, not human beings. Kenneth tells the story of his first visit to the Bulkley's house. He noticed many tiger skulls sorted from smallest to biggest. He hunted them every full moon and showed pictures of it to Kenneth and told him tiger hunting stories (he actually bought many of them that others had shot). Margaret interjects to mention the story of the little old man hunting tigers. Kenneth resumes the story of Dr. Bulkley's hunting experience. He tells of a hunting session in which Dr. Bulkley wounded a tiger and traced the animal in the jungle with his fellow hunter until sunset. They decided to return to the car and suddenly the wounded animal came down from the top of an anthill onto the young hunter. Dr. Bulkley's gun accidentally went off and killed the animal. The young hunter was wounded at the shoulder and spent weeks in a hospital recovering from surgery. Kenneth taught him to read during the time he was hospitalized and the hunter became the national deputy minister for education. He was in Washington, D.C. in the late 1950s and called on Kenneth to reconnect with him. He had remembered Kenneth all these years. He went under it at night with his flashlight, and suddenly came face to face with a black panther. He thought he was dead, but eventually realized the animal was encased in a sort of trap. Its head was out but it could not move. Kenneth got the cartwheels and crouched out.
