Sihanouk knew that Kenneth didn't speak French too well, so he arranged for Kenneth to sit at the dinner table away from his interpreter, thus making it impossible for him to get any help. But Kenneth used a technique to overcome the obstacle, and the king was surprised and just kept laughing. The group went to a theatre after dinner and returned an hour later. Cochran had a Marine colonel with a two-engine Beechcraft, and a co-pilot, six feet four tall or more, and Kenneth toured Java. They flew over to a volcano, the highest mountain on the island. The plane ran out of gas and started going down, but the co-pilot managed to get gas flowing from another tank. Kenneth took pictures of the mountain but passed out momentarily as the plane was suddenly thrown up into the sky when they got too close to the hot air of the volcano. He was to meet some Siamese officials and US Legation members. Kenneth urged his fellow Americans to be on time, but they would hurry because the Siamese, they said, had no sense of time and would not get to the meeting long after the announced time. Suddenly, the Siamese officials  showed up for the meeting before the time it was supposed to start. They had no sense of time, but they knew that the Americans would be on time, so they came early. It turned out that Kenneth was the only American to be on time and he received them while the others were finishing getting ready. Finally, Mr. Byrd decided to dispose of Kenneth, saying that he was assuming a knowledge of the country of Thailand that he really didn't possess. He expressed admiration for Kenneth's father as a scholar and the books he had written, but advised Kenneth not to claim to know what his father knew. Byrd didn't know Kenneth had written the books, and when Kenneth revealed that he was the "father" in question, it just took the gas out of him. That was virtually the end of British opposition while Kenneth was there. Over a course of 13 years Kip Landon (Kenneth Landon Jr.) began recording stories from his parents, Margaret and Kenneth Landon, resulting in 95 hours of recordings. Beginning on July 20, 1976, recording finished in June, 1978. The project resumed again in 1982 for a few months. After a long break, the third recording period began in 1988 and concluded in March 1989.
