Lepers were excluded from society and so he could not get a piece of land close by. Dr. McCain, another missionary, had successfully done a similar work in Chiang Mai, thanks to a service he had done to the Prince of Chiang Mai unwittingly. The McDaniels simply followed the model of Dr. McCain. It lasted two days, and the Landons' watchman was gone for three days, needing an extra day to recover from the celebration. Ah Chuan was concerned that his own baby might die of the same illness as the other baby. She also tells of Ah Chuan's whooping cough and the medicine he drank all at once, claiming the next morning that he was completely healed and could work again (in fact he could not cough simply because of the overdose).
