Eustace Haydon, his doctoral supervisor, was retiring and wanted Kenneth to succeed him. He told Kenneth that he will never forget him, and went on to tell how he would prepare for his class lectures and then try to figure out what "that son of a bitch Landon" would attack in the presentation. There were other people interested in the position, but Kenneth didn't apply because he couldn't afford the pay-cut it would mean: the job paid about half what Kenneth was making in his work for the government. Eustace Haydon, he was "a very conservative Calvinist" and Haydon was one of the two leading humanist philosophers in the U.S. Kenneth would challenge Haydon's premises, which Haydon was not used to. Haydon would challenge Kenneth's premises right back. This went on every class period. Haydon would start his lecture, and after a few minutes, Kenneth would interrupt him and argue that he had made assumptions that were erroneous. Beginning on July 20, 1976, recording finished in June, 1978. The project resumed again in 1982 for a few months. After a long break, the third recording period began in 1988 and concluded in March 1989.
