Kenneth thought up the idea of having a Thai typewriter and an English typewriter side by side on either end. Someone would type up the words in English on the one typewriter, then read the English and type it off touch-type style on the Thai typewriter as if it were English. Margaret points out that Kenneth spoke the Swatow dialect, Taichu, that was commonly spoken among the diaspora of Chinese in Southeast Asia. Kenneth had this dialect down so perfectly that the Chinese would marvel at him. They hadn't known any foreigners had lived in Po Leng, where his brand of the dialect came from. The Landons explain Kenneth's first hand experience learning Chinese and Thai languages by literally living with the native speakers. The original idea for the broadcasts came from the Thai Legation, as early as October, 1941, before the war began. Immediately after Pearl Harbor, the Thai government declared war on Great Britain and the United States. The Thai minister in the US said that the war declaration against the US did not represent the Thai people and asked that a broadcast program be set up to encourage the Thai people not to follow the government in war against the US. That was the beginning of Kenneth's Thai broadcasts. He had asked President Roosevelt what the first information that he wanted about Southeast Asia was. Roosevelt's answer was that he wanted to know what the Japanese intentions in Indochina were, and their intentions toward Thailand. What would they do? When would they move? The person was inquiring about Kenneth's knowledge of Souteast Asia and the Japanese intentions for Thailand. The caller ended by promising to send Kenneth a telegram about his coming to Washington to help the government. Kenneth wasn't very enthusiastic about it; he loved his job at Earlham College and was preoccupied with philosophy. It never occurred to either Kenneth or Margaret that the call from Washington was one of life's pivotal moments, that life would never be the same again. Margaret fully expected him to come back to Richmond after the three weeks. Sunday night, August 10, Kenneth took the train, arriving in Washington the morning of August 11, 1941, and that was that. He had maps. And he had a ten-year file of Siamese language newspapers, the only person in the U.S. who did. So some Siamese officials concluded that Kenneth had never truly been a missionary at all. He had been a spy. He was on his way back when he ran onto a middle-aged lady and began talking with her. The two were well into the conversation when they suddenly realized that they actually knew each other from Siam: they were both missionaries there, had dinner together once, walked together, and got to know each other over a period of years. It was a ridiculous experience.
