Siam: Kenneth's Letter: Mae's Health, Huit Church
Kenneth reads a letter about his mother's health. He learned that the cancer was completely removed during the operation. Victorine Smith had become the housekeeper because of Mae's failing health. Kenneth had problems with the Huiat Church. The evangelist would have instruction in the Bible at night and then help them prepare their lessons for school. The governor decided this was against the law and ordered the preacher and the chapel to be closed. Kenneth had to intervene to straighten things out.

Kenneth had his first service in the Chinese language in August 1929. The Chinese were delighted and "could even understand me." It was a strange experience for him to be taken for a "babar" (half Chinese). He was the only white man to speak both Thai and Chinese in Siam, and the only one to speak Chinese in the whole peninsula.

Siam: Kenneth's Mother Died
Death
On August 29, Kenneth wrote to his father about two letters he received from him mailed July 15 and 21, in which his father explained that he had lost all hope for his mother. Kenneth wrote assuming that his mother had already been dead for some time now. He had an extraordinary degree of extrasensory perception, and he did know at the moment his mother died. He was sitting unsually quiet, and Margaret asked him what was wrong. He responded that his mother had just died. It was in the day in Trang, and his mom died at night, half way round the globe.

Siam: Kenneth's Letter Home: Music and Sengora
Kenneth wrote a letter to his mother who had sent him a songbook. He owned several musical instruments. He was in Sengora where he expected to stay for a month or so. It was a very disorderly city. The Chinese were astonished at Kenneth's language ability. He held communion in Chinese. He had a very good experience with a Lord Lieutenant to whom Kenneth presented the Christian hope. A missionary in Bangkok had criticized Kenneth's method of using governmental channels for his evangelistic endeavors, but the Lord Lieutenant approved of it and said it made better citizens.

Siam: The Police Lieutenant at Trang, and Kenneth's Bra Chot
There was a young police lieutenant in Trang, slender, inconspicuous, not at all the kind you would expect to arrest a "tiger bandit." Yet he was absolutely fearless and quite courageous, without ever showing a sign of these qualities. He managed to arrest without anyone's help the most feared gang bandit in the countryside and so became quite famous. Kenneth was competing with this police lieutenant at the tennis court and was winning, very much against the happiness of the crowd watching their hero lose the game. Kenneth suddenly realized how difficult a position he would be in if he had actually won. He managed to have his opponent win and in a very Thai manner conveyed contempt for what they standed for without saying a word. Kenneth used this Thai technique called "bra chot" in the US as well. Margaret recalls at least two instances where Kenneth used the technique.

Siam: Kenneth's Letters: Furlough Plans, Churches, the Kids
The Landons were planing to leave for the US on furlough in a year and a half. He mentioned travel plans and where in the US they might be staying, his interest in a business course, his impressions of the human nature and the church worldwide. He remembers the kids learning to speak and all three languages (Thai, Chinese and English being used, sometimes in the same sentence)
