Margaret reads about Kaw Su Chiang, a Chinese immigrant who became extremely successful, having started from insignificant beginnings. He lived to be 96 after a very successful career. His son Phya Ratsida was more interesting for Margaret (Margaret and Kenneth pause to talk about Thai courtesy and forms of greetings; she got to talk with country women and learn a great deal of the culture; Kenneth tells a story about building the freedom highway). The old country women who came to see Margaret would always go back to the old governor, Phya Ratsida, and what he did for the region. He could have been seen as a dictator, or feudal, but he did lead the area to prosperity.

Over a course of 13 years Kip Landon (Kenneth Landon Jr.) began recording stories from his parents, Margaret and Kenneth Landon, resulting in 95 hours of recordings. Beginning on July 20, 1976, recording finished in June, 1978. The project resumed again in 1982 for a few months. After a long break, the third recording period began in 1988 and concluded in March 1989.
