Kenneth on Hornbeck (State Department)

Hornbeck was the political adviser on Asia to the Secretary, but he arrogated to himself the responsibility of adviser to the Secretary on anything. He once delivered to Ballantyne and Kenneth an elaborate speech, all in indirection. Kenneth told him that it was the first time he was experiencing administration in charades. Hornbeck was flabbergasted, but he didn't do anything against Kenneth. Hornbeck had a requirement that no officer could leave their desk until he (Hornbeck) had finished reading the morning mail.

Over a course of 13 years Kip Landon (Kenneth Landon Jr.) began recording stories from his parents, Margaret and Kenneth Landon, resulting in 95 hours of recordings. Beginning on July 20, 1976, recording finished in June, 1978. The project resumed again in 1982 for a few months. After a long break, the third recording period began in 1988 and concluded in March 1989.
