Married Life

Mary Blanchard proved a capable helpmate to Jonathan. During his absences, she took over many of his responsibilities. She managed their household, the farm, and even managed Jonathan’s official correspondence. She cared for her own seven children as well as boarding students. It was Jonathan’s custom to have discussions around the dinner table, and even this tradition was continued in Jonathan’s absence.
Jonathan, in turn, did his best to encourage and support Mary through his letters. He ensured that she was well taken care of. He would often hire extra help either for the house or the farm when he was gone for long periods.
