Move to Wheaton

In 1860, Jonathan Blanchard took up the presidency of the failing Illinois Institute. He renamed the school Wheaton College after city founder Warren Wheaton, who donated a significant land tract to the school. Jonathan was drawn to Wheaton, a school founded by Wesleyan Methodists, because of its firm antislavery foundations.
