To make matters worse, one J. M. Chapman came on the scene accusing Jonathan of stealing $3,000. He also came armed with a petition signed by residents of Wheaton and DuPage County calling for Jonathan’s removal from the presidency. Jonathan did stand trial on these accusations but was ultimately found innocent.
