Stephen Douglas Debate

In 1854, Stephen Douglas came to Knoxville, Illinois. For years, Jonathan had been writing public letters to Douglas on his position on the fugitive slave law. The debate between the two lasted four hours and was well attended by Knox students. Although Douglas was a skilled speaker, the students were convinced that their president had carried the day.
