19th-Century Education

Education in early nineteenth century America was disorganized. Schoolhouses were rough buildings and served students of all grades in a single classroom. Blanchard was able to find employment as a schoolteacher at age 15 as students and teachers were both in short supply. Vermont had even voted down a measure for uniform textbooks in schools! Each student would bring to school any available book.
