Temperance

Although it often took a backseat to other causes, Jonathan was a lifelong advocate of temperanceEven as a young boy, Jonathan Blanchard despised intemperance. He went so far as a to smash a keg of rum in his father’s cellar when he was sent to retrieve alcohol for the farm laborers. As an adult, Jonathan used his influence as a reformer to promote the temperance cause. Jonathan’s most prominent newspaper, The Christian Cynosure, actively promoted temperance. Articles arguing for temperance appeared frequently. Additionally, the Wheaton College catalogue required temperance from all enrolled students.
