Homeward Bound

The trip was arduous and did not improve Jonathan’s health. He wrote to Mary that he planned to spend the winter in the West. His health, the rigors of travel, and the dangers of attacks from highwaymen and hostile Native Americans made Jonathan afraid that he might not survive the journey home.
When Jonathan and Charles did make plans to leave Salt Lake City, Jonathan was again struck down by illness. After two weeks of rest, Jonathan and Charles sold their wagon and boarded a stagecoach for Denver. Jonathan arrived back in Wheaton in November of 1864.
